How You Can Help

The more descendants of Jean and Anne-Marie who are part of this project, the more successful it will be in identifying their DNA and reconstructing it.

So if you DNA tested, and you're a descendant - here's what you can do to help.

Whether you tested with AncestryDNA, 23andme, FamilyTreeDNA, MyHeritageDNA or LivingDNA, it doesn't matter.  All you need to do is upload your raw DNA file, which you can download from the place you tested, to gedmatch.com.

Gedmatch is a free service that works with all the big DNA sites and allows for the comparison of raw DNA files for genealogy purposes.  It will show which DNA segments individuals have in common.  For descendants of Jean Klein and Anne-Marie Dannenhoffer, who descend of different children of theirs, that will be Klein/Dannenhoffer DNA.

It only takes about 5-10 minutes to upload.  For those concerned about privacy, you are welcome to use an alias or nickname to protect your identity.  Many people on gedmatch use their initials only and you are welcome to do that.

If you tested with AncestryDNA, here are the steps to upload to Gedmatch-
(1) go to dna.ancestry.com, then Settings
(2) go to Download Raw DNA, it emails to confirm then you can download the file
(3) go to genesis.gedmatch.com and register for a free account
(4) sign into genesis.gedmatch.com and click "Generic Uploads" in the right column under "Upload your DNA files" to upload your DNA

It will give you a Kit #. That's all I need. Please send your Kit # and how you are descended of Jean Klein and Anne-Marie Dannenhoffer to ckanalley@gmail.com or message it to me on AncestryDNA. I will be happy to loop back with findings and analysis if you're interested.

Please note this project only deals with segments of your DNA that comes from Jean Klein and Anne-Marie Dannenhoffer, and I will not be doing anything with other segments of your DNA.  Any findings from this project that are presented will be presented in aggregate, protecting the privacy of living individuals.

To answer a few more questions you may have-

What about Klein/Dannenhoffer descendants who are related in more than one way?  I take that into consideration.  I use a process called triangulation to make sure at least 3 different Klein/Dannenhoffer descendants match on the same segment before calling it Klein/Dannenhoffer DNA for sure.

Will you be able to distinguish between Jean's DNA and Anne-Marie's DNA? It's one of the trickier parts of this research effort.  But as more and more descendants test, it's possible.  That's because even though they're from the same small area in Alsace-Lorraine-France, there are distant relatives who tested.  These are descendants who aren't direct descendants of Jean or Anne-Marie, but are related to one or the other.  They'll help identify which segments are from Jean and which from Anne-Marie.
